The curriculum at Cornelia Connelly Center provides a balanced education that enables all of our students to achieve and realize their full potential. In order to prepare every student for a high school preparatory program that begins in the Upper School, the Lower School Curriculum (fourth and fifth grades) is first focused on speeding student learning.
Problem-solving, collaborative learning, self-advocacy, and joyful civic involvement are prioritized in the fourth-grade curriculum. As a result, students become enthusiastic participants of math, reading, writing, history, science, religion, music, dance, art, and finally, a specialized health class called Girls Space. Additionally, they participate in an advisory program, which builds community and provides small group social-emotional support.
Moving on to the 5th grade curriculum, the focus is on courageously cultivating critical thinking skills through collaboration, inquiry, connection of ideas, and expression. With a sense of community fostered through historical discovery, students take ownership of their voices by writing about new topics and problem-solving with multiple strategies.
Students in grades 6 through 8 at the Cornelia Connelly Center Upper School take part in math, reading, writing, geography, science, theology, music, dance, artistic expression, and Girls Space classes. Moreover, our students meet with an advisor and a small group of Upper School students two times per week. Also, they take responsibility for their own learning objectives by honing their unique focus techniques each week in Math Lab and Learning Lab.
With confidence as the driving pillar, the 6th grade curriculum is created to ensure a smooth transition to Upper School. Specifically, students learn a variety of strategies for solving challenging problems and celebrate mistakes as opportunities for growth. They begin to identify as confident readers and writers, learning to communicate their thoughts in written and oral form.
Students have the chance to investigate identity and learn about various experiences as part of the 7th grade curriculum, which helps them better understand their personal selves. Continuing to practice working in groups, collaborating with others, and writing and speaking about their thoughts and ideas with cheerfulness.
Finally, the 8th grade curriculum is rooted in leadership. Students have the opportunity to develop their leadership abilities every day because they are the representatives of our school community. Students work to become leaders of our school, city, and nation in every class, with a particular emphasis on becoming ready for high school. It is through collaboration, problem-solving, writing, and reflection that students realize their ability to change the world. The Arts Program, consisting of music theory, singing, dance, and visual art, has two parts. Students are taught to music theory in the Lower School with a strong emphasis on singing. Each trimester, students at the Upper School immerse themselves fully in the three fundamental subjects of visual art, music, and dance.
Last but not least, the small-group, intergrade Cornelia Connelly Center Advisory Program fosters community and offers social-emotional assistance. Students are supported by their advisors during Advisory, who assist them in setting and achieving goals. Each group has two meetings a week with an advisor to discuss grades, objectives, and create a network of allies. Advising strengthens ties and gives children a greater sense of community at school.
Cornelia Connelly Center Middle School has teamed up with Grand Street Settlement to provide comprehensive after-school programs for their students. Since 1916, Grand Street Settlement has been dedicated to serving the needs of lower Manhattan's poor and immigrant communities.
The Extended Day program at Cornelia Connelly Center takes place in the Connelly Middle School building from 3pm to 6pm. It offers a variety of activities that cater to different interests such as sports like basketball, volleyball, softball, Jiu-jitsu, and track. Other programs include art club, fashion club, photography, STEM, and musical theater. Connelly Middle School is committed to providing its students with the resources they need to succeed, all the way through college graduation. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the New York State on PAUSE Executive Order, Connelly Middle School had to pause all in-person summer programming. However, plans for the summer of 2023 will soon be announced, and the school is excited to continue developing their programs to better prepare their students for success.
CCC maintains a lasting connection with its students beyond 8th grade, providing support and guidance throughout high school and post-secondary options To this aim, GSP and GSP 2.0 give the high school and college-aged alumni comprehensive and integrated, monetary, and academic guidance. GSP uses a college and career preparedness program to help middle school students match their abilities and passions with their goals for high school and college. This encourages them to see their choice of high school as an important foundation for their future.
As part of GSP's commitment to its students, sixth graders are encouraged to explore their values and interests in preparation for high school, college, and potential career paths. Seventh graders begin preparing for the TACH exam and research high schools to understand which ones are the best fit for them. The 8th grade curriculum is designed to help students navigate the high school application process, including important skills like interviewing, email etiquette, and time management. GSP is dedicated to placing each student in the high school that is the best match for their overall growth, whether Catholic, private, or selective public.
