The school's teaching staff are highly trained to provide appropriate experiences and activities within a suitable environment that helps children achieve their goals. They contend that giving kids the tools they need to grow strong identities and senses of value will help them succeed as lifelong learners. Additionally, the school recognizes that children's developmental differences due to age, individual rates of development, personality, learning styles, cultural backgrounds, and the ways in which each family functions should be taken into account when helping children grow and achieve.
At the Brownstone School, the teachers are passionate about working with young children, who are in a pivotal stage of development where laying the foundation for their future is essential. The aim is to prepare them for their future while still enjoying the essence of childhood, developing self-confidence, and learning foundational skills that are vital for success.
The Brownstone School prioritizes the process of learning over the product and believes that how children learn is just as important as what they learn. Teachers utilize positive language and clear expectations to create an emotionally responsive classroom environment. The Handwriting Without Tears program is also used to help children develop their fine motor skills and letter formation through multisensory activities and music. The Brownstone School's program schedule offers flexibility to accommodate the needs of families, with extended day options available. In each classroom, a daily schedule is followed, providing children with a sense of routine while engaging them in structured and unstructured activities. These activities include artistic mediums, blocks, literature, cooking, dramatic play, manipulatives, music and movement, and outdoor play. Music, movement, and art are integrated into the curriculum on a daily basis, with classroom teachers incorporating these elements into their lessons. The Brownstone School also has enrichment teachers who specialize in music and movement education for young children. These specialists visit the classes once a week, introducing students to a diverse range of musical instruments, styles, and songs, expanding their knowledge of musical traditions across cultures.
The Brownstone School recognizes that young children have a natural inclination to move their bodies and develop gross motor skills. To support this development, the school has a yoga specialist who helps children manipulate their bodies in new and different ways. The yoga program focuses on building strength, coordination, mobility, and balance while also improving proprioception and spatial awareness. Beyond the physical benefits, yoga promotes mindfulness, improves listening skills, and increases focus, helping children manage emotional upsets and stressful events. The school also utilizes Bilingual Birdies, a company that provides a fun and interactive way for students to learn Spanish through live music, movement, dance, puppetry, and theater-based games. During these sessions, students will learn ten to fifteen basic vocabulary words and short phrases, all while having fun and engaging in playful activities.
